How to Use Crochet Hat Templates

For these templates you can use any size hook or yarn to crochet basic hats. You can also use any stitch as long as it can be worked in the round. To determine which size template you’ll need, measure the person’s head by using a measuring tape, keeping it level across the forehead and over the temples. If you’re making them without a specific person in mind, you can use the annotated age group for recommended size. The sizes for the templates are based on US averages. Note: If your measurements are larger than the largest size in the table, use the largest template and make the crochet circle a little larger than the template. 

 Start your hat by creating a flat circle using the formula below. Increase until the fabric reaches the edges of the circle from the size you’ve chosen. Once you’ve reached the edge, stop increasing to turn your circle into a tube. The edges will start to curl in after 2-3 rounds, allowing you to work on the length. Continue to work on the length until your hat reaches the bottom of the template. This will create a hat that reaches just below the earlobes. For a slouchy hat, continue to work on the length past the bottom of the template.
