What is a Crochet Yarn?
I’m sure you already know what yarn is, but I wanted to help you relate it to crochet in this section. Yarn is one of the two materials you need to crochet (besides the hook, of course). Yarn comes in a variety of fibers, textures, colors, and weights, and the choice of yarn can significantly impact the look and feel of a finished crochet project. I’ll go into more detail later on as this is just an introduction into the world of yarn. Whenever you’re choosing yarn to work with for the first time, consider using a soft acrylic or cotton yarn that doesn’t pill or untwist easily. I generally recommend using a medium (4, or worsted) weight yarn, but you can go up a size – I would not recommend using a smaller yarn to start with.
How do Hold Yarn?
At a minimum, wrap the yarn around your index finger once or even twice. This will cause the yarn to be in the perfect position for your hook to “yarn over.” You can also hold on to the yarn by keeping it inside of your hand, or you can drape it over the top of your hand and pinch it between your ring finger and pinky for extra control.
Tips + Tricks
- Practice consistency: Your hands are learning a new language, give them time to grasp the muscle memory by moving very slowly until you can work smoothly. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Remember that this is not a race.
- Relax: Roll back your shoulders away from your earlobes, release your tongue from the roof of your mouth, and remember to take a breath. If you’re tight your crochet will be tight as well.
- Experiment: Don’t like mine or anyone else recommendations? Create your own! Heck, wrap the yarn around the hook manually if all else fails.
