What is a Plastic Yarn Mat?

A plastic yarn mat, also known as plarn mat, is a large 4×6’ mat made out of plarn. Plarn is a type of yarn created by cutting and tying together strips of recycled plastic bags.

How to Make a Plastic Yarn Mat

In its most basic form, a plarn mat is created by using a large hook, plarn, and single crochet to crochet a large rectangle. These mats can be used as doormats, outdoor mats, or decorative mats around the home.

Tips + Tricks
  • Plarn mats are eco-friendly and durable. They’re also a great way to repurpose single-use plastic
  • Many crochet community groups crochet plastic yarn mats for the homeless in their area. It gives them the opportunity to rest their bodies on something other than the cold, hard ground.
  • Please check with your city/county laws and regulations as some larger cities have banned the use of plastic yarn mats because of pollution.
